Cervical Treatment: Post-Concussion / Whiplash Course

Based on the same clinical framework taught in our live continuing education courses.

Cervical spine dysfunction is a common but often overlooked contributor to symptoms following concussion and whiplash injuries. Patients frequently present with overlapping symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, neck pain, and difficulty concentrating, making it challenging to determine the underlying source of dysfunction. Clinicians who can properly evaluate and treat the cervical spine play a key role in improving recovery outcomes.

This course provides a practical and evidence-based framework for identifying and managing cervical spine dysfunction associated with concussion and whiplash injuries.

We begin by discussing the overlap between concussion symptoms and whiplash-related cervical symptoms, helping clinicians understand why patients often present with similar complaints and how to differentiate between potential causes.

The course then reviews cervical screening procedures used to identify possible cervical injury and determine when further medical evaluation may be necessary.

Next, you will learn how to perform a comprehensive cervical examination, including assessment of cervical range of motion (ROM) and techniques to distinguish between mechanical joint restrictions and soft tissue limitations. Special attention is given to evaluating upper cervical mobility, which can play an important role in post-concussion symptoms.

We also cover assessment of deep neck flexor (DNF) coordination and endurance, including why these muscles are commonly impaired following cervical injury and how to properly evaluate their function.

The course then addresses cervicogenic dizziness, including examination techniques used to identify cervical contributions to dizziness symptoms.

Finally, we review therapeutic exercises and treatment strategies designed to address cervical mobility deficits, deep neck flexor dysfunction, and cervicogenic dizziness. These evidence-based rehabilitation techniques are presented in a practical format so they can be immediately integrated into clinical practice.
